About
What do I bring to the table?
===================
Having been a strategic advisor on the top of the wave of digital societal developments since 1992 (Dutch government; European Commission; RAND Corporation, independent since 2006) and Board Member since 2008 (global and Dutch Boards relating to the Internet) I bring a wealth of experience with the past, current and future impact of digital developments.
In addition, I bring deep experience in Board governance (including previous Chair of 2 global Boards: Public Interest Registry and ICANN; and previous Chair of a Duch Foundation: NLnet Foundation), having continued to train on Board governance skills next to executing in Board functions (including IMD-certification with distinction in 2024).
My passion lies in ensuring technology serves people — promoting inclusive, sustainable digital societies that are a pleasure to live in. I bring a strong commitment to responsible governance and good stewardship, with a focus on financial integrity, ethical leadership, and environmental responsibility.
Currently, I serve as a Director on the Board of ICANN, the global nonprofit responsible for ensuring a secure, stable, and interoperable internet. I was elected by my peers to serve as Chairman of the ICANN Board (2019–2022), and will complete my third and final term in October 2025.
My board contributions have emphasized improved governance practices, strategic foresight, and strengthened engagement with governments and global stakeholders.
Who could benefit most from my skills and insights?
=======================
I look forward serving “for purpose” companies in setting up and running global Boards; advising Boards in matters of good board governance; strategic foresight; and risk management.
In particular for companies standing ready to “move global” I can bring a wealth of insights and access to networks due to my global work since I accepted the job of “Information Society Policy Practice” Director at RAND Corporation by the end of 1999 – also in interaction governments and society/public opinion.
In summary: I thrive at the intersection of governance, digital technologies, and public value — and welcome opportunities to contribute to mission-driven boards and initiatives that demand strategic insight, integrity, and stewardship.
