About

Hello, I%27m Darren Walsh

Board & Advisory Partner | Strategy, Governance & Execution

Most organisations don’t fail because of a lack of ideas, technology, or effort.
They struggle because the real problems are obscured by activity.

Boards generally recognise this.

There is no shortage of strategy, initiatives, programmes, or data.

Yet performance remains inconsistent, delivery unpredictable, leadership teams are overloaded, and profitable growth becomes harder to achieve.
This is not a capability issue.

It is a system issue.

The Board-Level Problems I Help Address

Boards, founders, and senior leadership teams typically engage me when they struggle with one or more of the following:

1. Profitable growth constrained by system capability
Organisations pursue growth by re-engineering launched products, adding cost, or increasing complexity, rather than unlocking hidden capacity through capable processes, sound organisational design, and effective leadership routines.

2. Strategy without execution
Strategy exists as language, plans, or off-site events, not as a disciplined process that drives priorities, decisions, and delivery.

3. Governance that reassures rather than exposes risk
Reviews focus on status and narrative instead of the financial, operational, and customer impact of decisions - allowing risks, underlying problems, and value leakage to remain hidden until they become material.

4. Firefighting and activity replacing progress
Leaders are consumed by escalations, initiatives, and improvement activity that creates motion but doesn’t resolve stubborn problems or significantly shift performance.

Individually, these issues feel manageable.
Together, they create organisational fragility and limit profitable growth.

My Role as an Advisor

My role is not to add initiatives or frameworks.
I help Boards and executive teams see what is actually limiting performance, and then change the system or routines that is producing those outcomes.
I am particularly effective at:

• Cutting through noise to expose the few constraints that really matter
• Converting strategy and governance into clear priorities, decisions, and action
• Refocusing leaders on the organisation’s primary value-creating processes
Result: faster decisions, reduced firefighting, and restored control.

What Boards Typically See Change

When I’m involved, organisations commonly experience:

• Flow: 50–80% reductions in lead time
• Capacity: 2–3× output without adding people or complexity
• Cost & Risk: Reduction through better system design, not cuts
• Leadership Effectiveness: Fewer escalations, clearer accountability and more time to get the right things done
• Execution Confidence: Strategy that is visible, trackable, and adaptable
Most importantly, leaders stop relying on heroic effort and build the capability to improve continuously.

Why This Perspective Is Different

I founded Making Lean Work after repeatedly seeing organisations invest heavily in improvement, yet struggle to make it stick.

I’m the author of A Leader’s Guide to Making Lean & Continuous Improvement Work (Routledge Productivity Press), a Shingo Prize–nominated book that focuses on leadership behaviours and management systems, not tools.

My work centres on a simple question Boards care about: Why are capable people working hard and still not getting the results they expect? - Because its usually a system problem, not a people problem.

Advisory Focus

I take on Board, Advisory Board, and Non-Executive roles where organisations are navigating growth, acquisitions, transformation, or operational complexity and where there is a genuine desire to improve and build something sustainable.

My contribution is helping Boards move from activity to outcomes, and from firefighting to flow.
